Matchday Routine

Football and emotional reason aside, what's the one specific thing you miss on a matchday.

I'll start the ball rolling - Chips, Gravy Peas and scraps about half 2 waiting for the team news to come through.

Wainwrights.

Genius shouts like, 'Come on these are sh*te' after 5 mins, 'line it', 'clear your lines' etc

I do shout several while watching the streams, but its not the same

This stuff is about rituals, so here's mine:
The pre-match analysis with my son (this stuff matters); the tram ride and walk up to the ground; seeing the same faces....in the same places and enjoying their company; taking my spot behind the goal; hearing the start of Fanfare.....; the post-match analysis on the tram home.

I should mention, particularly, that I miss Mike Garnett who was a permanent presence in Moss Lane for decades and who sadly died shortly before Covid.  He was a former colleague and possibly the catalyst that brought me back to the ground after the years when I'd had my eye turned away from footy and onto pleasures of the flesh!

A typical London Alty away day goes something along these lines....Normally gazing up at the departure board at one of your major London terminals, then scarpering to bag a good table once the platform is announced. Arriving generally about 3 hours before KO, putting a whip together and locating the local pubs in the Good Beer Guide, generally at the ground shortly before KO. Catch up with mates, bit of a sing song and then repair to the local hostelries for the debrief. Depending on whether we’ve won or lost a major influence on how long we hang around the town of the away team. Either the Euston Tap or Parcel Yard at Kings X for a nightcap.

As all will know the 90 minutes is obviously the centrepiece of the day but it’s the whole day out with your mates that makes it. Hopefully we can get back to that again next season.

I miss the moment I come through the turnstile at the Golf Road and look at the away support. 'always travelled well', 'bobbins', or 'not bad' are the three options I choose from.

A thoroughly modern one for me.

Strolling up to the Libero hut for my pre-match pint of Pomona Pale.

Certainly missing my stint at the club on matchdays running the club shop in Community Hall, plenty banter, etc. hopefully back sometime this season.

I just miss the friendly faces of my Alty friends, and sharing the joy of a great goal with those around me.

I miss the whole matchday experience... but mainly seeing friends, catching up, enjoying the footy, and celebrating (hopefully) an Alty win...

Usual Moss Lane procedure...
*Chips either from Good Catch outside or inside ground...
*As enter ground at Golf Road end buying programme, golden goal tic, & doing guess the crowd...
*If early then pint inside CSH with friends & get team sheet...
*Stand in usual spot with mates & usual faces around for match...
*1st half with all banter from fans (plus some players)...
*Half time pint outside CSH (or brew if cold) chatting to mates...
*2nd half - more banter... mates checking flash scores on mobile for score/table updates...
*Hopefully a win... then further chat with mates (plus maybe another sneeky pint) before head home...

Away trips bring further joy of train/car trips plus doing few pubs in different towns, but above is home ritual...

Main thing is catching up with mates & watching proper football!  Really missing it...  Hopefully we can return before end of season... try to stay positive & keep safe everyone...
