But Lewis Hamilton being flagged as potentially the first driver in his first season of F1 to win the world championship can't be right - because whoever won it in the first ever season of F1 had to be a rookie.  A bit like Alty won the conference in our first ever season in the league.  Or have I missed something?

Stupid.

oh sorry didn't read the post just saw the title.

the first formula 1 winner was Giuseppe farina. the nephew of Pinin farina he had been racing big boy cars for years before the first formula 1 grand prix in 1950 he had many grand prix wins under his belt as well. i believe that is why the first person to win F1 was not a Rookie.

your pedantically

But he was in his first season in the world championships - and therefore pedantically a rookie.
