First I thought McKenna for goals and menacing factor, then I changed my mind to Kevin Ellison, as we are in desperate need of a winger  then I changed again to Kilcline ... Only kidding   :o

Suppose Kevin Ellision would be my choice. For his ability to beat a player with his speed and that powerful shot he has.

Thoughts .....

PS: Sir Jackie Swindells goals would also be nice I suppose.  ;D

Initial thoughts....

Peter Densmore: now there was a left full back!

Paul Cuddy: class centre half;

Jeff Johnson: sheer versatility - could play centre half, left midfield or centre forward;

John Davison: impeccable at left full back, left midfield or central midfield;

Paul Showler or Barry Howard: left wing;

Joe Pritchard: tremendous source of goals from a midfield player;

Ken McKenna: would be great to see him alongside Colin Little!

Joe Flaherty: the legend returns!

Ian Tunnacliffe: an absolute goal machine and a lethal predator in the penalty box....

For me, if we're talking about current players, it would be;

Kevin Ellison on the wing and Danny Adams at left back.

PS: I'd try to find a place for Paul 'Top Banana' Ellender too.

I would pick Jeff Johnson for his ability to play generally anywhere, a quality player.

Barry Howard would be great on the wing, and he scored a few goals. (Rotherham being the best?).

Ronnie Elliss upfront for his cheek.

Paul Cuddy in defence

Peter Eales in Goals.

Stuart Terry, Sharratt at his best, McKenna and Green (to stare the opposition to death) and Ronnie Ellis

I think it's great that you can get a good idea as to how old the posters are by who their favourite players are!

It shows we've had some fantastic players throughout the years.

PS: Apart from Jeff Johnson and Graham Barrow, my favourites would include Crackerjack Swindells and Derek 'Tank' Halliwell!
(What does THAT do for guesses at my age? :D)

I'd have Pete Densmore, Nicky Daws, Peter Conning and the legend that is Ronnie Ellis....but I suppose that, as a previous poster indicated, this just identifies my age range

I suspect that the real reason that you want Ronnie Ellis back is so that his (still) rather attractive wife would return to the Moss Lane main stand!!!

Mr Cult.

Your perspicacity astounds me. That could indeed be given as partial reason I'll grant you. However a further contributory factor is that i would quite like to gain access to the Dorian Gray esque portraits so obviously owned (and stored carefully in the respective attics of) by Mr & Mrs Ellis and Peter Conning who actually looks younger now than he did 20 years ago.

The major reason however, this being a Football Forum is the additional options that these players would offer

Its great to reflect on the teams that you grew up with - especially as its not always for their ability that you remember them with fondness !!! I remember vividly running parallel with Rowlands against Barnet (91?) to the corner flag to celebrate his goal, Andy Greens menacing stare, being told that Ken McKenna had once bitten someones ear off (shocking to a young lad !!!), Kingy and his chinese writing, Bradshaw and the Tottenham move etc etc

Thats what makes supporting Alty so ****** brilliant !!!!

Andy Green and Ken McKenna up front definitely - although they would probably play very few games together due to various suspensions  :D

Would also include Danny Adams - class :)

I agree that the players people pick identify their age group, so I thought I'd try and kick against that.  I'd also try and introduce some new names

Jackie Swindells from the 60's (of course)

Two of my heroes from the early 70's Alan Wolfe and Bobby Todd (never mentioned!)

Len Dickinson and Gerry Casey to add further weight to the midfield

From the 76/77 and beyond, it's got to be Jeff Johnson

From the rebuilt late seventies team, Mal Bailey and John Rogers

From the post APL champions era, Peter Densmore and Paul Cuddy

If we wanted a 'fast and tricky winger' (programme notes to describe who?) - we've got Ernie Peters (um, is ths right?), ian Morris, Barry Howard, Paul Showler, Stuart Terry, Kevin Ellison

Left back?  Got to be John Davison

Actually, all this proves is that every generation could legitimately pick 3 or 4 of the squad over any five season period and all of us would be perfectly justified in their selection, with wistful sighs and nostalgic remembrance of the (in my case) last 40 years of joy (and pain) that the mighty red and whites have given us.

And another thing, I didn't have much access to internet last week - and therefore couldn't contribute to the best Alty goal thread - but Mal Bailey at Runcorn in the trophy semi final has to be one of the most joyous!

No mention of GH.  He was playing slightly before my time so can't say if he was any good or not, but seemed to get a few games so he must've been ok?
