NUNEATON BOROUGH relegation fears were confirmed last night - they will be forced to drop out of the Blue Square North next season.
Director Ian Neale said after talks in Birmingham yesterday that the club would go into administration following a board meeting later this week, triggering the demotion. But the Liberty Way club do not know at what level they would be able to compete in non-league's pyramid for the 2008-2009 season as they struggle to solve their financial crisis.
Neale explained Boro were now consulting the Football Association about the best course of action they can take but admitted that, with debts totalling more than £750,000, administration is the only option left open to them to ensure the long-term survival of the club.
A despondent Neale, who met FA officials along with the club's solicitors and accountants in Birmingham yesterday, said the club would hold a board meeting later this week to inform directors of the situation.
"As soon as we go into administration the Conference will automatically relegate us but we shall take our punishment and look to take the club forward from there," said the Nuneaton-based builder, who came to the club in late March as major shareholder along with five other new directors and is in the process of buying the club.
"Once we are relegated and out of the Conference's jurisdiction we come under the Football Association and they will decide at what level we shall start the 2008-2009 season.
"But the FA Compliance Department has been extreme-ly helpful in guiding us along the right lines and will steer us towards what they think is the best direction for the club."
Neale continued: "One of the biggest problems are Conference rules. They offer no incentive for clubs who are struggling with insolvency to try to sort out their problems without being kicked out of the league.
"I believe the Conference will revise these at their annual general meeting next month."
Boro could have held off going into administration and kept their place in Blue Square North next season but it would have only delayed the inevitable, acknowledged Neale.
"We could have chosen that route but all we would be doing was delay relegation. At least now we can look to rebuild the club and take it forward."
