Mansfield Town will unveil a brand new scoreboard before Saturday's FA Cup clash with Altrincham fully expecting their latest equipment to signal a safe passage through to the First Round Proper of the competition at full-time.

Managed by former Watford and Sheffield United defender, David Holdsworth, the Nottinghamshire-based club have displayed fine form in the Conference and currently sit fourth in the table.

They beat this weekend's opponents 2-1 just two weeks ago in the league but Holdsworth, a former FA Cup Semi-Finalist, knows from experience that everything is different in this competition.

"It's a special trophy and always a big day for the fans," he said. "I was lucky enough to lead out Sheffield United at Old Trafford as captain against Newcastle in 1998 after scoring the winner in the quarter final, so I know from personal experience that there is no better competition in the world and it's so unpredictable."

Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given was the hero as Newcastle triumphed 1-0 on that occasion, and Mansfield themselves have an impressive Cup history.

In 1969 they swept past a West Ham side that included World Cup winners Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters with a 3-0 Fifth Round victory.

Despite dropping out of the Football League in 2008 after a 77-year stay, the Stags have still enjoyed some fantastic Cup runs in recent years, most notably in reaching the Fourth Round in 2007-08 where they eventually lost to Middlesbrough.

"There is a lot of FA Cup tradition here and we're looking to carry that on against Altrincham," said Holdsworth. "The club is going in the right direction and we're a professional and disciplined outfit at the moment."

He added: "Our main aim this season has to be promotion and we have a great desire to get back into league football."

Asked whether he takes advice from twin brother Dean, the former Wimbledon and Bolton striker who now manages Newport County, he said: "We ring each other if we need any help - he worked under Sam Allardyce and I played under Graham Taylor so there are some important influences there."

A scoreboard?! I much prefer getting to the ground five minutes late and anxiously asking the first person you see if we've scored yet.
