To be honest I am not that bothered about watching world cups, Euro championsips etc

Like others the media and gutter press (mainly the red tops)  piss me off with their stupid headlines such as always feeling the need to for example, drag up the war everytime we play the Germans etc.

Then we get the big hype about England being able to beat anyone and then when they draw or lose a game in the mini league phase, they are then cast as a  bunch of no-hopers.. and everybody wants the manager hung drawn and quartered.

We also have to then, sit and listen to all the so called experts (usually old ex players) or EPL Managers give their analysis  of how England fkd up another chance to win the dam thing, their conclusion usually being that there are far too many foreigners playing in the EPL. These same EPL managers then a few weeks later pay millions for >>>> Yip you've got it .. A foreign player.    And so the four year cycle starts again.

Yes but ignoring that it's still our national team competing in the greatest competition in the world.

I really don't see the press / media coverage etc a reason to not support your country.

Personally can't wait for the world cup!!

Phil, you said before you'll watch any football, so why delibrately miss the chance to see the 'greatest players in the world' compete on the biggest stage in the world?

I supported United from young age, living next to the ground and seeing the odd game. However, when I went to school in the Alty area, I met mates who followed Alty, went to a few games, and now get to every game I can whilst still supporting United. If Alty played United in the FA Cup then I would back Alty, because of them being underdogs and relatively less successful in the tournament. I think you can follow as many teams as you like, it's just up to you who you support when they meet. Also, I reckon there are lots of reasons for following a team - I look out for Fiorentina's results because they beat United once and played really well, and I really loved Batistuta; I look out for Auxerre because of their performance against Arsenal in the Champions League and also because of Guy Roux being a legend; Hamburg because my dad used to work there and told me about their old team, etc. It's not always so simple as supporting one team all the way, although it is possible and dedicated. Either way you're just enjoying football.

No Football fan will miss all of the World Cup. The problem with this one is that as a Sport it has already been ruined by the fiddling and cheating by FIFA and particularly the French influence that conrol it. Plus it is being played in a country where stealing, corruption and cheating are the national sport. They have also done their best to turn this into an African Cup and not a World Cup. .

Nice to see England supporters and the stupid one-eyed English midia as usual telling us all that England will win it - makes it all the sweeter when they embarringly mess it up to a third world nation.

Because the Competition has been corrupted by commercialism. I shall probably see the goals on the news.

I've got to admit that I love the World Cup and I support England all the way. However, I am not foolish enough to think we are good enough to get any further than the Quarter Finals - anything else would be a bonus. Unfortunately, a lot of people are stupid enough to get caught up in the media hype and the team is constantly expected to perform way beyond it's ability.

Three games of footy a day on telly can't be a bad thing, surely?    :)

I think everyone is missing something here. Most people who support two clubs support the biggest one first and the smallest one second. So it is not really Alty fans supporting another team, it is more likely to be fans of league clubs who also support Alty. As the result of the poll suggests these fans account for about half the regulars, so they are very important to the club. The main reasons why they watch Alty more than their other club seem to be money, moved to the Alty area, don't like the way league football has changed, hatred of all seater stadia, safety, or in United's case it is impossible to get a ticket. In the long term the children of these people will become Alty fans first and possibly fans of a league club second.

in United's case it is impossible to get a ticket.

One of the biggest myths in football. There are empty seats at Old Trafford nearly every week nowadays.

Alot of England fans get carried away and say we can win it, however they are usually the same people who say we are sh*t after we've only managed to beat the likes of estonia by a 3 goal margain, ie - they know nothing about football.  However the fact is ENGLAND CAN WIN IT, to argue that we can't is foolish, I don't expect to win it by any means, but if you look at the quality we have in our team then how can we not be in with a chance?

Funnily enough I don't rememeber England messing up any World Cup Finals campaign to any third world country??  Ceratinly not in my lifetime??  82 we went out to the expense of West Germany, 86 to Argentina, 90 to West Germany, 94 didn't qualify at the expense of Holland (cheating Koeman) 98 Argentina, 2002 Brazil (alot of it may be 3rd world but they are widley regarded as the greatest exponents of the game) 2006 to Portugal.

Are you Scottish, Irish or Welsh?  If so i'm so envious of your fantastic World Cup record!  I'll be well jealous come next summer when the tournament kicks off in June and England face the possiblity that we might be knocked out of the competition, whilst the rest of the home nations can sit at home worry free in the knowledge that they can't get knocked out because they haven't qualified.

By the way if you're English then I despair.

My Dad took me to Moss Lane at Christmas 1953 and I saw us ship five to Northwich Vics. It didn't put me off, and I saw a good few games over the next five years or so.

However, Easter 1956 saw me impulsively jump on the train and head for Old Trafford, where I saw the Busby Babes demolish Newcastle 5-2. I was totally hooked on the atmosphere. My parents were less enthsiastic, but agreed that I could go to games with my Uncle, which I did until that fateful day in 1958. The crowds and the passion were too much for my folks to take in, and I was redirected to Moss Lane (I'd taken in a few games anyway) and also had a brief flirtation with County - we lived on the 71 bus route.

The bottom line - I was, and still am, a football junkie ! I've watched Linotype, Old Alts (played the odd game in the lower level teams), City, and when I was exiled to the wilds of the West Midlands in 1970 I tried six or seven clubs before settling for three very enjoyable years with Aston Villa ! I'll watch ANYBODY - if I'm in the park and there's a kickabout I automatically stop and watch for a while (our late lamented labrador used to want to join in, and I would have to move on).

To me, it is, and will always be the beautiful game - but those who remember my vow to blank the forthcoming World Cup will realise that I hate the sprawling commercial monster that it has become.

I agree with that sentiment 100% Phil..

how can you love football and blank the World Cup? Its the highest level of the game. Its a valiant stand but not sure FIFA will take much notice!!

I enjoyed Euro 2008 more than any tournament since Euro 96. standard of football waxs fantastic, and all the better that England were'nt playing as it a avoided the brainless media bandwagon

I assume you won't be watching or supporting England in next years World Cup then?

I will  be, it was just refreshing to enjoy Euro 2008 as a neutral, as England's failings couldnt detract from my tournament as a whole.
